Natural Flea and Tick Treatments

Given the serious diseases spread by insect bites, it is important pets be protected from fleas and ticks. It is also wise to protect against other biting insects such as mosquitoes, lice, and gnats. Flea and tick drops are a popular and effective treatment, when applied to the skin it enters the blood stream and poisons the biting insects. While a good product for many, some pets are sensitive to such treatments. Others pet owners are uncomfortable using such a caustic product either on their pet or around themselves or their family members. However, there are natural alternatives. There are supplements that can be given to help repel insects, as well as safe and natural spray repellents. Natural insect repellent shampoos as well as collars are also helpful. Since repellents do not kill the insects they are most effective in preventing bites and infestation, but not as useful on an already infested pet. Consult you vet if your pet is infested. It is recommended that you contact your vet about insect control. Dogs in particular will need a heartworm preventative if in a mosquito laden area. Never use an insect product intended for a dog on a cat, depending on the treatment it can be fatal.
