PROTECTING PETS FROM INSECTS

With the arrival summer comes the concern about insects and pets. Insect control is one of the most common yet serious pet health issues. Bug bites are not just annoying they can be dangerous. Ticks and mosquitoes, in particular, carry some very serious diseases. Health problems are also associated with flea and tick infestation. This can be particularly problematic for older pets or animals that already have existing health problems. A trip to the vet is essential particularly for heartworm protection. Vets will often prescribe insect preventatives too. Drops that protect a pet for a specific period of time are the most common. However, pet owners may want to consider other forms of insect control too. One reason is that the drops often don’t protect against all biting insects, and depending on your location and the type of drops used, mosquitoes, flies, gnats and other insects can bother your pets too. Secondly, having more than one form of protection is wise as no single method of insect control is completely effective. Using a repellant and/or insect collar along with drops can provide a more complete form of protection. Natural insect protection may also be needed for sensitive pets that have a reaction to insect drops. Natural collars, repellents, and supplements are available for safe and effective insect protection. Routinely checking for fleas and ticks is also recommended regardless of the type of preventative used. The following are natural solutions to insect control.
